SharePointMigrator assists in migration of a file share to SharePoint in the following manner:
· Usually, a file share has accumulated files over time which may not be in use by any user. You want to identify these files and avoid migrating these files to costly storage space used by SharePoint. These files are termed inactive files.
· A file share may be containing files of all different types (e.g., music, video, zip archives, office documents etc.) and you want to find out files of specific types and avoid migrating them to SharePoint.
· Users have created duplicate copies of many files in the file share over time. You want to identify the duplicates and avoid migrating duplicate copies of files to SharePoint.
· You want to migrate only the files which are created / modified / utilized recently (say in past six months) to SharePoint. These files are termed as Active files.
· SharePoint is very stringent about what characters it allows in the document names in the document libraries. Many characters that are allowed in file names in a file share are not allowed in SharePoint. You want to translate any illegal character automatically so that migration of the files does not break in the middle of a migration process.
· You want to identify and migrate the active files to SharePoint and move the inactive files to some low cost storage in order to free up the file share spaces for many file shares from a central console in a non-interactive, unattended mode.
· You want to analyze all your file shares to calculate storage space requirement in SharePoint for putting the Active files. Reports on Active files, Inactive files and duplicate files are generated with a single mouse-click and are available in bulk for all file shares for your analysis.
· Using the analysis, filter, name translation and data move engines in SharePointMigrator, once you have separated the Active files from the rest of the files into a staging location, migrating a folder is easy with the "Explorer View' of the SharePoint user interface.
· Simply create a document library in SharePoint with the folder name, open the document library and drag-and-drop the content from the staging location to the SharePoint user interface.
